Happy New Year (Again)

We went to China Town in LA this weekend for the big New Year's Parade. It was really, really quite a nice day. Everyone was in a good mood and we found a nice spot to watch the parade. We had noodles and saw baby turtles and the girls loved the huge tanks of fish. China Town is such a fun place to visit. Although, I must admit, I do miss Little China in SF. Ah well...

Merry Christmas!

Our Holiday eCard - the actual cards are still sitting on the kitchen table. Tsk-tsk!

We made gingerbread houses out of graham crackers. I had made a ton of them for Maggie's Kindergarten class and she got sick at school that day and had to miss the whole decorating experience. So, we re-created it at home. It was a lot of fun and there was quite a lot of sugar consumed...

Like this...

Everyone got in on the act.

Maggie was very methodical.

This little guy was made by Todd, who has waaay too much patience, out of mini marshmallows and tiny anise candies.

One of the finished products - voila!!

We made gingerbread men too. And, Momo decided to buck tradition and make a gingerbat!

And, now, a fun game for you to play... In the tradition of "Where's Waldo?", here's "Where's Momo?" Can you spot her???

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

A Few of My Favorite Things...

I keep seeing these wonderful lists of things that people like. Just random, happy little lists of the things that make people smile. So, minus a snappy title, here are a few things that make ME smile...

Can you believe it? It's a Halloween Izze and it's so pretty to look at and even prettier to drink. Yum...

I love the look of vintage Halloween decorations. Sadly, true vintage Halloween items are very expensive and very hard to find! I found this at Michael's - by Martha Stewart. Cute, vintage-like and $7!

Check out the cat - adorable!

I found these at a little antique store in Carpinteria - love, love, love! I'm waiting for some of the diners in my house to get a little bit older before we actually light the candles at dinner time.

A total score at the Pasadena Rosebowl Flea Market. A lovely vintage strawberry (can you tell I like strawberries?) table runner and five napkins. In great condition so they may just be nice repro prints.

I found these linens as well - adorable and the dogwood on the green is so freakin' pretty! No, I don't own an iron. (okay, I do, I just don't like to use it)

This is not one of my favorite things. However, it makes me smile when I see it on my oven. Blanket-O-Flame!! Sounds so dangerous...

I found this on eBay. Pajama Bags!! I dream of the girls tucking their jammies into one of these guys...

This is a perfect example of a craft gone wrong. I found this on the Anna Maria Horner website and for some reason, my fabric bubbled up on the canvas. I will try again because it is such a wonderful craft!

Farewell to Sunburnt Arms

Ahh, another looong pause between posts. I've found this thing they call Facebook on the internet. Have you heard of it?

Hee...

Reasons why I wish to remove myself from Facebook:
1) It takes up way too much of my time.
2) It makes me feel highly inadequate for having such a SMALL circle of friends. How DO people have 387 friends, really??
3) It makes me slightly uncomfortable to peek at friend's of friend's photos - awkward photos if you know what I mean...
4) I feel bad if I don't return a Scrabble play in a timely manner.
5) It takes up way too much of my time.

So, here are the last photos of the Summer 2008 (our trip to Carpinteria) and, hopefully, the first of a new round of posts for me. Really...

Jellybeans for Breakfast

When I was a little girl, I L-O-V-E-D books. I loved to read them, hold them and just look at them for hours and hours. I'd get lost just staring into the pages and imagining that I was really there in the stories. It was the perfect way of escaping from the reality of my home life. One of my favorite books as a child (actually there are so many) was "Jellybeans for Breakfast" by Miriam Young. I cherished every page right down to the tiniest jellybean.

Flash forward 30 or so years and I am now blessed with two little readers of my own. I have tried to foster a love of books in them and we make weekly journeys to the local library to supplement our own growing stash of books. They too are hooked! I've tried to bring many of my old favorites into their lives such as Richard Scarry and Dr. Seuss. As my oldest began approaching Kindergarten age, I began to think of "Jellybeans for Breakfast" and how perfect it is for girls her age. I looked at book stores and online and couldn't find it. Well, that's not totally true, I did find it online for over $150.00 - whew!!

I asked my mother if she remembered it and, hopefully, had she saved it?? My mother is a saver. She saved every report I ever wrote in school, every art project, mother's day card, even random drawings on the back of envelopes. And, she had indeed saved an enormous amount of our childhood books - tons of them! My kids were thrilled to get all the wonderful books from grandma - but, one was missing.

Now, I have to admit, my mother's saving habits have always bothered me. I'm a chucker. If it's not in use, or will not be in use it's gone. We've fought about this and it's been a painful subject for both of us. It's so odd, a part of me is so deeply touched that she carefully tucked away all of these wonderful creations of mine over so many years! And, when my own little artists present me with something they have made, I too am finding myself bitterly fighting the urge to save every last tiny scribble and paint splatter.

Last year, I was looking in my mother's closet and I discovered another stash of children's books. My heart jumped. Would it be there? And, suddenly, there it was. Just as I had remembered it all those years ago. I was so happy that I cried. I cried for all the times I had read that book, so loving every word and illustration. I cried for all the times I had told my mother to just get rid of all the junk!

Flash forward to tonight. My husband is reading to our little girls. Reading the very book that brought me so much joy and continues to give so much joy to my own children.
Thank you Miriam Young.
Thank you mom.

Mushrooms and June Bugs

I'm actually stunned that this blog is still in existence! I would have thought they would have kicked slackers like myself out of the "blogger family" a looong time ago!

Tsk-Tsk!

Shame on me for being so flakey... I've been here, reading other people's blogs, just happy to see how the other folks are living their lives. My own life just doesn't seem to have that sort of blogworthiness that I associate with posting online. Perhaps, today is the day that changed all that...

I discovered TWO wonderful things in my garden. Well, one was actually horrible and the other was more scintillating - but wonderful none-the-less! The first was the discovery of a Stinkhorn Octopus Mushroom. Upon first sight, I swore that they were some horrid creatures hatching out of eggs and I was determined to call animal control to come identify and tag these wild creatures. Mushrooms. Who knew a freakin mushroom could look so insanely monster like!

The scintillating discovery? June bugs having (umm) relations in the grass. My four-year-old was the one who found them and she was so surprised to find two of them and why are they so close together and why is that one on top and why are they hissing at each other?? I'm not ready to answer any of those questions, mostly because I don't know all the answers right now. However, we did watch the whole thing and we even took pictures. Van Nuys is STILL the porn capitol of the world!!

These pics make me smile - and that's a good thing

This is an ancient pic of Molly but seeing her in this coat while we are in the midst of this awful HOT summer makes me feel a bit cooler! WOW - how she has grown!

Yes, Maggie is not smiling but the look is just so impish...

I'll get bigger pics next time!

On a lighter note

If you look up MUFFIN TOP in Websters Dictionary I do believe this is the accompanying photo. Hoo! Poor Molly...

Some days...

Some days I think I'm working way too hard at pleasing everyone else and doing absolutely nothing to better myself. It's the kids, or Todd or the cat... Now, it's the landlords - yes, the ones who wouldn't give a FAMILY with TWO SMALL CHILDREN a break when we asked for a BRIEF extension on our lease to find out if Todd had a job up north. They actually thought we'd stay in the 115 degree heat of the San Fernando Valley for a full extra year and they forced our hand! We either had to sign the lease or give notice and pray that we find a place to live.

We are praying.

And packing.

And, now they want us to hold all the applications for them so they didn't have to get a PO box. Next they'll ask us if they can stop by to do minor redecorating. They'll ask if Todd "doesn't mind" seeding the whole yard or putting in a new dishwasher. Ugh! I just hope that the next people who live here are "real" renters. People who stain the carpets and let the grass get weedy and just act like normal folks. We've bent over backwards to keep this place pristine and they still wouldn't give us the courtesy of a brief extension. I do have doormat written on me don't I??

Sleeping Beauties

Yes, this IS a post about life with Maggie and Molly - finally.

I have this thing that I love to do. No one really knows about it and yet it is truly one of the things that gives me such unbelievable JOY.

When the girls are asleep, I love to quietly sneak into their rooms and just watch them. I could honestly do this for hours (days) and never grow tired of it. It is so hard to describe why I love to do this so much. It's not the obvious "oh, aren't they little angels" sort of thing. It goes way beyond that...

When I look down at them, I see them for who they really are. Instead of seeing a tantrum throwing 16-month-old, I see this luscious little fairy who looks as though she was flying high above the crib and then, upon hearing the door creak as I open it, drops to the mattress and lands in her mid-flight position. Her face has an impish smile and her chubby little legs look almost as though she was doing a fancy Irish jig in the sky. I just stare and stare, barely breathing.

And, on the rare occasions that my 3 year old is actually napping, I am fascinated to see her, not as my way-too-sassy pre-schooler, but as this sweet (okay, yes, angelic) child who is just not of this generation. She looks like a child from the 1920's - golden curls, pink cheeks and those crazy dark lashes. But, it's not just the physical, it's more about the old fashioned, deeply innocent nature she exudes. She seems to have found her way into this 21st century bed straight off the page of an old Ivory soap advertisement.

Then, they wake up.

It's back to reality and all innocence and impishness is GONE! We're back to hair pulling, and teasing and (my favorite) the tantrums. So, I guess I DO know why I love these rare moments so much. Sometimes, it's just so hard when all I seem to do all day is play referee and reprimand. These precious moments make me quietly observe the true beauty of my children.

Hydrogen Peroxide Rocks!

Okay, so it's only my second post and I'm already NOT talking about life with Maggie and Molly. This is good though. We're probably moving soon and want everything to be super clean when we leave our rental home. So, I got down on my hands and knees with a toothbrush and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide to clean the shower - fun! But, the HP is incredible at getting off stains, mildew, etc. Just pour it on full strength and wait for it to stop foaming (the cool part) then scrub away!

Sooo, what were Maggie and Molly doing while I was having fun with bubbles? Napping!! Well, Molly was and Maggie was reading Richard Scarry's Best First Word Book Ever. She's moving away from the whole nap thing but we try...

Welcome!

Maggie and Molly...

Oh, how they have changed my life! Each day is something new and each day I am reminded how LITTLE I really know about being a mom. It's an amazing mix of sheer joy, utter frustration and a good dose of whimsical loopiness. Welcome...
